You know what they say… “April showers bring May flowers”… If that is truly an accurate weather predictor then Northern Ontario will be absolutely blooming soon! As we face another very wet week here in North Bay, I am feeling optimistic and energized while I watch the snow melt and the robins nesting.

It can be easy to become overwhelmed by feelings of negativity, isolation, helplessness and fear, especially when we are spending increasingly more time on social media instead of interacting with people in person, and in nature. While there are important economic and political situations happening in the world that do deserve our attention, we should remember to take time to celebrate differences, acknowledge positive change, wonder at innovation and hope for the future.

For example, here in North Bay we have been concerned for years that our landfill is reaching capacity. The community has come together in many ways to promote waste diversion, and we have successfully extended the life of our landfill by sending used textiles (clothing, bedding and towels) to local second-hand/used-clothing stores, updating our Household Hazardous Waste Depot, and most recently, we have expanded our list of locally recyclable products. The icing on the cake was the (recyclable) flyer every household received in the mail last week, announcing that everyone would be receiving new, larger capacity recycling bins next month. These bins encourage our community to further embrace recycling, as the bins are easier to use (they have wheels and a lid to deter the racoons and crows) and will require no pre-sorting of items!!

The media may be ‘showering’ your phone and airways with updates on wars, gas prices, AI scams and unemployment statistics, but buried beneath those headlines are a few blooming buds that have put a smile on my face and a Spring in my step this week!

Here are a few good-news stories you may have missed between the headlines:

Celebrate Differences: April is Autism Awareness Month

Acknowledge Positive Change : Recycling Program Success in Romania

Wonder at Innovation: Canadian Breakfast of Champions…and Astronauts!

Hope for the Future: Birdwatching to Improve Cognition?

Reassurance and Perspective from EdgePoint: ‘Oh Brother!’ A frank (and humorous) letter between siblings, in the style you’ve come to expect from EdgePoint’s engaging writing team!

So grab your umbrellas and rainboots, side-step the worms, and find a way to stay ‘singing in the rain’.
