16th Annual Cymbria Investor’s Day – May 15 2024
Every year, Thomson Financial Partners has participated in the annual Cymbria Investor Day.
Ted, Eric, Chris, Shiv, and I attend both the public meeting and also various private meetings with different members of the investment management team.
As most of you know, Cymbria and Edgepoint are important investment partners for us, and we have been investing in their portfolios since their inception in 2008 (or, if you count their predecessor entities, our cooperation dates back to Ted and Bob Krembil becoming friends in 1978).
Cymbria Day is an opportunity for us to hear directly from the entire investment management team about there process, where they are finding investment opportunities and how they are identifying risks, often stemming from herd investing.
For over 46 years, their investment discipline has remained steadfast. The investment team looks for quality businesses experiencing positive change before it becomes obvious to others (and therefore reflected in the share price). In other words, they aim to invest in businesses poised for future growth due to change (they identify four types) without paying for that anticipated growth.
While their process may sometimes seem out of favor or boring, it has consistently provided pleasing long-term results. Based on our due diligence, we expect no different in the future.
The attached video includes the formal comments from Cymbria Day and runs approximately 45 minutes. While we believe you will find value in the entire video, if you would like an expedited version, you may wish to skip the introductory comments and jump directly to the investment management team’s remarks:
- Minute 11:08 – Tye Bousada – Proprietary insights and investment process, “Value is created by seeing something others don’t and being right about that insight”
- Minute 17:40 – Geoff MacDonald – The 4 categories of Change.
- Minute 24:39 – Andrew Pastor – Fairfax – an example of positive change.
- Minute 30:00 – Frank Mullen – Why the average Fixed Income investor hates change.
- Minute 36:38 – Jason Liu – Examples of change in private equity.
- Minute 43:12 – Geoff MacDonald – Conclusion and “Why it Works”.
