Shiv’s Story
My parents chose Canada. They came here to escape a nation ravaged by centuries of colonialism, to pursue opportunity, and to give me a better life than the one they had known as children. I am forever grateful.
Growing up, I was surrounded by life sciences professionals, but I dreamt of being an astronaut. My first physics class, however… ‘Houston, we have a problem’. Studying life sciences, I concentrated in molecular biology which led to working in medical research. But, something was missing. I didn’t feel fully committed and wearing a lab coat for the rest of my working life held no appeal.

When I was a kid, my parents would give me American coins they got in change during the month. Once a month, I would go to the bank to deposit my loot. It was thrilling to watch the numbers grow in my passbook. It remains one of my happiest childhood memories.
So, I hung up the lab coat and went back to university to study economics. That little porcelain piggy bank turned out to be the threshold to a personal fascination with how economics impacts every aspect of our daily lives.
When I interviewed at Thomson Financial Partners, Eric, Rob and Chris said I would be better suited in the empirical side of this industry where my passion/talent for analytics would be put to good use. “Thanks for coming in”.
Not so fast, I wanted to focus my talents on helping clients achieve optimal financial health and well-being, giving them the tools needed to make informed decisions.
“No, I’ll work here” I said. What kind of person tells a prospective employer “you’re going to hire me?”
I am a persistent person, a person who understands that to be successful you really must be ‘All In’ for your clients. I bring passion and persistence to the office every day.
By the way, I still dream of being an astronaut and love nonfiction astrophysics books to remind myself of the vastness of the universe and my humble place in it. We are all amongst the stars.
